John Stephenson moved to Malibu in 2023 after living in Hawaii for over 50 years. He set up his pottery in 2024 and changed his style from reflecting Polynesian motifs to one expressing his new environment. He now uses the pelican, coyote, sea lion and Cooper hawk in his work rather than the ʻiwa bird and moʻo of Hawaiʻi. Throughout his career, John has always used clay to tell stories, to evoke a sense of place, and to whimsically put a smile on people’s faces.
